In a glittering ceremony where Manchester United’s Mary Earps claimed the main prize, the spotlight shone on City’s accomplishments. Erling Haaland, the prolific striker, was honored as the 2023 World Sport Star, while the mastermind behind City’s success, Pep Guardiola, received the Coach of the Year award. The Team of the Year accolade was accepted by Captain Kyle Walker on behalf of his teammates.

Despite being on Club World Cup duty in Saudi Arabia, Haaland, Guardiola, and Walker managed to participate in the ceremony by delivering brief video speeches.

Looking beyond the individual awards, the 70th edition of the renowned ceremony underscored football’s prominence, with all four major awards claimed by the sport. Mary Earps took home the headline prize, succeeding last year’s winner Beth Mead. City and Guardiola superseded England’s Lionesses and their manager Sarina Wiegman in their respective categories, while Haaland joined the illustrious list of previous winners, including last year’s victor Lionel Messi.

The event also paid tribute to the legendary Sir Kenny Dalglish, a Liverpool and Celtic icon, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional contributions to playing and managing football.
