Liverpool’s star player, Mohamed Salah, is facing a more serious setback than initially thought. The right-winger sustained a hamstring injury while representing Egypt in the AFCON 2023 match against Ghana. Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, disclosed the concerning news, revealing that the muscle injury is more severe than anticipated. This unfortunate turn of events could potentially keep the 31-year-old forward sidelined for almost a month.
Liverpool Announced About Mohamed Salah
Liverpool announced on January 21 that Salah would be returning from the Ivory Coast, where the AFCON matches were taking place, to undergo treatment in the hopes of rejoining the Egyptian team if they progressed to the knockout stages. However, Ramy Abbas Issa delivered a blow to this optimistic plan by stating that Mohamed Salah’s injury would require 21-28 days of recovery, not just missing two games as initially hoped.

Issa emphasized that Salah’s best chance at participating in the ongoing AFCON would be through intensive rehabilitation in the UK, followed by rejoining the team once fully fit. Liverpool confirmed Salah’s return to Merseyside on Wednesday after he attended Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Cape Verde, a match that secured Egypt’s place in the last 16 of the tournament.
The club acknowledged the severity of Salah’s injury and outlined their plan for his recovery. Mohamed Salah will start an intensive rehabilitation program with Liverpool’s medical team at the AXA Training Centre. The injury, worse than initially feared, had forced Salah to leave the field during the AFCON fixture with Ghana in the first half. An agreement was reached with the Egyptian FA for Salah to undergo treatment in Liverpool.
The statement on the club’s website outlined the immediate collaboration between Salah and Liverpool’s medical staff upon his return to Merseyside. The goal is to get him back in action as soon as possible, both for the club and the country. Liverpool expressed their commitment to providing Salah with the best chance of returning for the later stages of AFCON if Egypt advances further in the tournament.
Despite the initial challenges following Salah’s injury, Liverpool demonstrated their prowess on the field by securing a convincing 4-0 victory over Bournemouth. The Premier League leaders extended their lead by five points at the top, with second-half doubles from Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota.
